Portland Water District Facts

Founded:
The Water District was founded in 1908 when it purchased the Portland Water Company and expanded the operations of the company.

The Portland Water Company began in 1862 to provide a public water supply, drawing water from Sebago Lake.

Mission:
The Portland Water District provides a public water supply to cities and towns in the greater Portland area, including Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, and Gorham.

Collections:
The Water District has a number of historical artifacts, including glass negatives, photographs, newspaper articles and objects relating to the water business.
