The Portland Water District was organized in 1908 when the Portland Water District purchased the Portland Water Company.
Concerned citizens who saw a need for a public water supply had created the Portland Water Company in 1862 to draw water from Sebago Lake.
The Water District now serves a number of cities and towns in the greater Portland area.
